The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Low Sugar Peanut Butter

July 10, 2023

Peanut butter is a popular snack that can be enjoyed throughout the day. It is a versatile spread that can be paired with several food items and meals, but its nutritional value is not so straightforward.

On the one hand, peanut butter can be a sneaky source of unhealthy fats and added sugars.  Shockingly, research indicates that 75% of people consume more than the recommended sugar intake. On the other hand, when consumed in moderation and paired with healthier foods, it can provide a range of essential nutrients. For optimal benefit, it is important to choose peanut butter brands that are low in added sugars and preservatives.

There are a wide variety of points to consider when searching for the best brand and type available. In this article, you can explore your diet so that you can add low sugar peanut butter to your grocery list and diet.

Consider Your Dietary Needs

Always start with your dietary intake when deciding what type of peanut butter you'd like to add to your pantry. This requires an understanding of your health and fitness goals, in addition to knowing what's included in every jar.

Use these steps before heading to the grocery store:

The Importance of Cutting Out Sugar

Cutting out sugar is always a net positive, no matter what sort of diet or lifestyle you adhere to. Ingesting a lot of sugar can spike your insulin levels, lead to the development of diabetes, create heart issues, and lead to obesity and overall poor health.

By managing your sugar intake, you'll be better able to hit all of your health goals and can prevent your body from becoming overly inflamed. People who reduce their sugar intake will be better able to stay hydrated and recover from their workouts.

Something as simple as finding a low sugar version of peanut butter can work wonders in this regard.

A simple two tablespoons of peanut butter has a large amount of sugar. When you multiply this times multiple servings, you will see how you can quickly make your sugar intake skyrocket without even thinking about it.

Look at the Protein Content

When searching for different types of peanut butter, make sure that you also check out the protein content. Protein is one of the greatest benefits of eating peanut butter. To maximize protein content, many people add a few spoonfuls to their smoothies.

This is helpful since protein helps people build muscle, burn fat, and get the ultimate body composition results. Whether you are bulking, cutting, or simply looking to have better athletic performance, peanut butter provides an excellent snack.

Low sugar versions of peanut butter have fewer additives and may also have a higher protein content. Consider how much you are looking to intake regularly when choosing any variety of peanut butter.

Consider the Calorie Count

Next, consider how many calories are included in the low sugar peanut butter that you're searching for. Typically, going with a low sugar version will also drastically reduce the calorie count. This lets you take in healthy calories without further leading to your potential obesity and belly fat.

Anyone looking to have significant muscle definition should definitely opt for low sugar peanut butter.

Check Out the Dietary Fiber

Another benefit of low sugar peanut butter is that you are more likely to get significant dietary fiber. Dietary fiber assists you with digestion, ensuring that you can live longer and have better digestion.

A higher fiber content also shows that your peanut butter is made with real nuts and not artificial flavors and filler items. Dietary fiber is a core part of your overall health and will allow you to get the best value from your low sugar peanut butter.

Make sure to also monitor things like your fiber-to-carbohydrate ratio. This is an indicator of Health, and 1 to 10 is a good ratio to check for when buying food products.

Specific Dietary Models

Always consider your dietary preference when trying to find the right low sugar peanut butter option. Peanut butter is popular with people who adhere to the keto diet. The keto diet is an option that shoots to reduce carbohydrates while increasing fat content.

Peanut butter is a high-fat food due to its nut content. By reducing the sugar content at the same time, you increase the nutritional value while still stocking up on the healthy fats that you need.

It is also a reasonable snack for people who have recently undergone certain surgical procedures, such as gastro sleeve. You will have sensible options in front of you that will allow you to manage your figure, nutrition, of your health, and wellness.

Determine Whether You Want Organic

You will typically see low sugar peanut butter options marketed as a health-conscious variety. In many cases, this means that you will also be able to find organic options. These organic offerings provide the opportunity to get non-genetically organism (GMO) foods into your system that are free of added hormones and other such genetic modifications.

In taking advantage of these organic options, you are less likely to take in potentially harmful additives and ingredients. While organic isn't mandatory, eating this way is a no-lose situation whether you are interested in losing some pounds, bouncing back from a medical procedure, or just putting the highest quality foods in your body.

Monitor the Carbohydrates

Carbs are always a tricky balance for many people, no matter what sort of dietary requirements or restrictions they have. Someone who follows the ketogenic diet will be more inclined to reduce their carbs as much as possible.

Someone on their weight loss journey may also be wary of carbs, depending on their philosophy and health outlook. When shopping for a low sugar peanut butter option, you will find that it has slightly less carbohydrate content.

This number is particularly important to monitor when you are looking into your fiber-to-carbohydrate ratio. Regardless, check the ingredient label of your low sugar peanut butter to know exactly what you are getting.

Read the Ingredients Label

Aside from the nutritional facts, make sure that you read the ingredients list found on the label. While a product might be marketed as a low sugar option, it's sometimes possible that other sweeteners, such as high fructose corn syrup, are included.

These sorts of sweeteners are potentially perilous to people's health, and should also be high on your list of items to exclude. Different types of sugar may also be listed under different names.

Do your research into any peanut butter that you purchase so that you have a clear idea of every ingredient included in the recipe.

Understand the Benefits

Cutting out sugar is an absolute no-brainer whether you are purchasing peanut butter or other delicious foods. This is an excellent snack when you cut out the sugar because it will not spike your blood sugar levels nearly as much.

People who load up on sugar early in the day are more likely to hit a crash by lunchtime. When you reduce the sugar content, your food will digest easily and you will be better able to think clearly, manage your energy, and feel like your normal self.

Consider Your Household

You need to also consider the health and nutrition of your household if you are purchasing peanut butter for your family. Peanut butter is a favorite food for kids, whether they like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, peanut butter apples, peanut butter and crackers, or several other snacks.

Too much sugar can lead to childhood obesity and difficulty focusing at school. By reducing the sugar content, you will let your children have their delicious snacks without loading them up on potentially harmful sugar.

Items that you put on your grocery list will always affect your entire household and not just you as an individual.

Shopping Based on the Peanut Butter Product

Take the time to research and find the healthiest peanut butter products on the market, ones low in sugar. Today, artisan companies craft an array of unique peanut and nut butters.

Many of these brands offer peanut butter options that are low carb, with reduced sugar content, packed with protein, and void of any potentially harmful artificial sweetening ingredients.

Here are some ways that you can find the right fit:

Find the Best Brands

Peanut butter is one of those staples that everyone has a preferred brand for - like salad dressing, orange juice, or jelly. But if you're in the market for a quality peanut butter, it's worth taking the time to understand a brand's ethos and mission. From there, you can hone in on a product that satisfies your taste buds and values.

Since you are searching for low sugar options, you will typically want to look for companies that put health at the forefront. Learn about how long the brand has been in business, its circulation, and how you can stock up on whatever you are looking for.

Shop for Taste

Of course, taste needs to be a primary factor when shopping for peanut butter. Just because it is low in sugar does not mean that it needs to be devoid of taste.

Today, plenty of high-quality, healthy, low sugar peanut butter products still taste amazing. In looking for these peanut butter options, take time to look for reviews to see what other people are saying about it.

While it may require some experimentation, it's worth developing a concise list of excellent peanut butter products that boast both taste and nutritional benefits.

Determine How You Will Eat It

The peanut butter that you shop for will also depend on how you intend to eat it. Some people like eating peanut butter by itself, grabbing a heaping spoonful at a time. Other people intend to bake peanut butter cookies, prepare peanut butter sandwiches, or otherwise take advantage of this sweet and nutty flavor.

Determine how you would like to eat your peanut butter, and let it inform the brand and type that you search for. This also means looking into whether you want to eat creamy or crunchy peanut butter options.

Consider How it Is Sweetened

When you're searching for peanut butter that is low in sugar, make sure to also consider how else it might be sweetened. For example, peanut butter that is low in sugar might still have artificial sweeteners. They might also be sweetened with things like vanilla extracts, honey or other sweeteners.

There are a variety of flavors around, so determine which type suits your health needs and sensibilities.

Have a Budget

When putting together a grocery list, budget is often a primary consideration. And while it's okay to splurge on premium peanut butter now and then, understanding the prices of other comparable brands will allow you to shop and stock up wisely on bulk purchases if needed.

Browse different price options at the grocery store and consider shopping with a company that sells artisan peanut butter online. Look for discounts and promotions whenever you can, particularly when trying out any flavor.

Compare the Container Size

Finally, make sure that you also take the time to get to know the container size for any peanut butter product that you are searching for. Gauge how much peanut butter you use on a weekly or monthly basis.

There are a variety of peanut butter products, so you will need to try a few different kinds to figure out how long they will last and to make sure that you get your money's worth with each purchase.

I am type 1 diabetic, and have been following a low sugar diet since I was diagnosed at the age of 12. The ADNB have really helped me feel like I’m indulging without it negatively effecting my blood sugars. I love that I feel like I can still indulge in something sweet without it ruining my glucose.

These butters have wonderful macros!!

I just started eating healthier and have always been a huge fan of almond butter so this info is so helpful with helping me stay on my low sugar eating!

I stayed away from nut butters for years due to the top reasons you listed, I didn’t want all the fat, carbs or sugars.

When I discovered American Dream my fears changed and now the butters are part of my daily life.

What got me to find American Dream? After starting to relapse with Anorexia and went back to seeing a nutritionist and she was adamant that I need more fat in my protein and it was a battle to get me to agree to add it to my meal plan but when she brought up American Dream, the nutrition facts and the flavors I was curious as the sugar was low, great source of protein and a tad bit lower calories than other peanut butters. Then seeing the flavors I was curious.

I was still very cautious with adding peanut butter due to brands like Jiff and Skippy that have higher calories, more sugar and an overly sweet flavor that left me wanting something sweet.

Needing support in adding nut butter, something off limits, my boyfriend and I looked at the flavors and choose a few; flavors played a big role in my first order and it’s been almost a year of enjoying American Dream.

I will say I wasn’t totally loyal to American Dream at first as I found other low sugar nut butters with lower calories and nothing but disappointment it was too sweet, lacking the abundance of toppings like American Dream, and the taste was off such fake nut butter flavor.

So while the blog suggests shopping around I suggest American Dream above all others. Stop your research here.

This was very helpful. For years I never realized that nut butters had sugar. Yikes, what was I thinking! I now only buy ones that are just nuts, unless it’s American Dream Nut Butter that is ;)

Very informative and learned a few things I didn’t even think about! I spent a lot of time trying out nut butter, looking at labels. the quality of ingredients, sugar content and making comparisons. ADNB are simply the best I have found out there! So much better than what you can get at the local store.

I love how ADNB has all unique nut butters with toppings, and they’re still better macros and calories than any regular peanut butter at any store. My absolute favorite treat is to eat it off a spoon!!!

Great info!! Why would anyone buy butter from the store when we have these available!! All good ingredient and way more FUN!!!
